Assistant Director of Nursing - Namaste Alzheimer Center
The Assistant Director of Nursing assists the Director of Nursing with the administration of
assigned nursing units, including policy development, organizational planning and the direction
of the delivery of geriatric nursing care, as well as the development and monitoring of standards
of gerontological nursing practices. This position also requires promoting public relations,
education and consultation within assigned units.
Essential Job Specific Duties/Responsibilities
1. Assists the Director of Nursing in day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department in
accordance with Federal, State, and organizational rules, regulations, and guidelines.
a. Collaborates to develop methods for coordinating nursing services with other
resident services to ensure the continuity of the residents’ total care.
b. Makes recommendations to the Director of Nursing as necessary concerning the
operation of the Nursing Department.
c. Participates in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility’s
Performance Improvement Program as assigned.
d. Admits, transfers, and discharges residents as required.
e. Completes administrative functions, including receiving and recording physician
orders; completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies and charts; and
2. Attends committee meetings as assigned.
a. Assists in the preparation of reports to submit to committees as directed.
b. Provides information to the Performance Improvement committee as required.
c. Implements recommendations from established committees as instructed by the
Director of Nursing or Administrator.
3. Assists in the management of nursing staff.
a. Completes daily rounds of the assigned units to ensure that all nursing staff are
performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing
standards and Federal, State, and organizational rules, regulations, and guidelines,
including the use and disposal of supplies and personal protective equipment.
b. Ensures that all Nursing Assistants are under the direct supervisor of a Registered
Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
c. Reviews complaints and grievances made or filed by department staff and reports
d. Meets with unit staff on a regularly scheduled basis to assist in creating
improvements in the service provided to residents.
e. Participate in employee performance evaluations.
f. Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and
hazardous chemicals in accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures
governing accidents and incidents.
g. Assists in planning clinical supervision for newly hired Nursing Assistants.
4. Completes nursing care functions for the facility.
a. Informs nursing staff of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room
assignments, etc. and ensure that rooms are ready for new admissions.
b. Greets new residents upon admission.
c. Makes rounds with physicians as necessary.
d. Visits seriously ill residents throughout the shift to observe and evaluate each
resident’s physical and emotional status.
e. Ensures that direct care is provided by a registered or licensed nurse, a certified or
state tested nursing assistant, and/or a nursing assistant trainee qualified to
perform the procedure.
f. Reviews nurses’ notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the
nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident’s response to the care,
and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident’s wishes.
g. Assists Director of Nursing in identifying areas of improvement and developing
and implementing corrective action.
h. Monitors medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications
are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.
i. Informs family members of the death of a resident.
j. Provides direct nursing care as needed.
5. Satisfies all educational in-service requirements mandated by CHI Living Communities,
the department, external accrediting, and regulatory agencies.
a. Attends all mandatory in-service programs.
b. Adheres to facility policies and procedures.
c. Completes yearly online education program by deadline.
d. Attends employee meetings on a regular basis.
In addition to the essential job specific duties listed above, the Assistant Director of Nursing
shall be required to perform all duties (essential and non-essential) in a manner consistent with
the mission and values (compassion, excellence, inclusion, integrity, collaboration) of CHI
Living Communities and will be evaluated on such basis. Furthermore, every employee must
