Clinical Medical Assistant

 

The George Mason University Student Health Services Department, invites applications for a Clinical Medical Assistant. About the Department:

Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including but not limited to, initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis. SHS operates its main clinic on the Mason Fairfax campus and smaller clinics on the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech (Prince William) campuses.

 

About the Position:

The Clinical Medical Assistant is a health professional who works interdependently with other health care professionals to provide quality health care to the patient in a clinic setting. The Medical Assistant is educated and trained to perform clinical skills in the medical care environment. The Medical Assistant is responsible to the Lead Registered Nurse, Associate Nursing Director, Executive Director or any other physician-appointed supervisor in the facility. This is a restricted position.

 

Responsibilities:

Clinic Skills:

  • Measures and records vital signs;
  • Records patient intake, including allergies and current medications;
  • Prepares patient for exam and performs routine testing;
  • Performs EKG’s;
  • Changes dressings, applies bandages and other first aid procedures;
  • Maintains supplies, equipment, stocking and sterilizing instruments;
  • Maintains a safe, efficient and orderly flow of patients through the clinic;
  • Performs accurate, legal and ethical documentation and follows HIPAA guidelines;
  • Chaperones sensitive exams; and
  • Complies with all SHS and University policies.

 

Administers Adult Immunizations:

  • Accurately and safely administers immunizations under the approved direction of the Executive Director;
  • Accurately documents immunizations administered to the patient; and
  • Schedules immunization appointments, per SHS protocol.

 

Phlebotomy / Laboratory Techniques and Safety Practices:

  • Performs phlebotomy;
  • Performs basic laboratory CLIA waived tests;
  • Disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards;
  • Practices OSHA safety standards;
  • Operates required laboratory equipment and instruments; records data; complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace; and
  • Processes specimens.

 

Member of the One of the SHS standing committees:

  • Participates as an active contributing member of one of the SHS committees (TBD at time of hire).

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Medical Assistant Certification or equivalent training and experience;
  • Diploma or certification from an accredited Medical Assisting program or equivalent training provided through Military service;
  • Demonstrated communication skills;
  • Phlebotomy skills; and
  • Medical Assistant or related experience in a hospital or health care setting post education.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in a physician’s office (preferably in adult medicine or college health);
  • Experience and knowledge of unique needs of a college student;
  • Knowledge of adolescent and adult immunization requirements; and
  • Healthcare Provider BLS certification.
