President
President
Savannah, Georgia
Savannah State University is seeking a highly motivated, visionary, and charismatic leader to serve as its next President. This individual will be a transformative figure, guiding the institution toward new heights of distinction while honoring and building upon its rich history.
Savannah State University is the first public historically black college and university in the state of Georgia and the first institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The school was established in 1890 as a result of the Second Morrill Land Grant Act, which mandated that southern and border states develop land-grant colleges for black citizens. Later that year, the Georgia General Assembly passed legislation creating the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youths, which served as Georgia’s 1890 land-grant institution until 1947. A preliminary session of the Georgia State Industrial College was held in the Baxter Street School Building in Athens, Ga., before moving to Savannah in October 1891.
Established in 1733, Savannah is a historic city with a revered past, a vibrant present, and an innovative future. With nearly 400,000 area residents, Savannah has maintained steady growth, with the economy based mainly in shipping ports, manufacturing, tourism, and the military. It is home to the fourth busiest port in the nation.
Savannah State University seeks a transformational leader with the vision, capability, and drive to inspire the campus community to higher levels of eminence by weaving the threads of the past into a tapestry for the future. The next president of Savannah State will possess a record of successful past visionary leadership, a proven track record of achieving and advancing academic excellence, and a history of continuous development of a strong leadership team, faculty, staff, and students. The next president will have record of success with institutions or organizations of similar size and complexity. Individuals with the requisite leadership experience in education, industry, business, government, the military or other sectors will be given full consideration.
